200k - FAIL!

Saturday was my first long ride of the season. 131 miles! I had (have) no base to speak of and it was a long shot but I felt pretty good. I had done a 30 mile ride the week before. Not prepared by any stretch of the imagination but I am pretty good at pushing through and finishing. Well, this was not the case. ~20 miles to go and I had nothing left in the tank. Nothing!

I had a monkey on my back for most of the ride. With 90 miles behind me, I got to Middlebury for a much needed rest. I took about 45 minutes off from the ride and tried to recover. I think now that I fell short mostly because I wasn't quite fueled right during the ride. I was able to get another 20 miles or so before I hit Vergennes and call for an air strike. My wife already knew I was in trouble and had headed out to find me. That was about all it took to realize that it was time to call it.

I got picked up with my tail between my legs yet surprisingly proud of my accomplishment giving my recent health concerns. I definitely realized what I have to do to get where I want to be. June 9th is the date for the 300k. There is a 200k option which I will probably go for. I still have a positive outlook to start and complete the 400k on June 30th. Time to get to work.

hey - i think i passed a bunch of you guys near Bristol on Saturday morning on my way home from riding Chandler Ridge. Nice job all things considered, and you had a terrific day for it.

I say nice job pushing through as far as you did Wil. You still smoked me on the climbs until you cramped up. You are on the upswing from your collarbone and such and you did great.

See ya in June if not before!

Wil, you done good. You've got about as much of base as I do, but have had larger setbacks the last 2 years, and you got on it and got out. Good on you.

Thanks Mandy. Yeah, that would have been us out there. Real good day to be out there. You're right, all things considered, I'm happy with the outcome.

Thanks Greg. I can't complain. I'm happy with my results. I'll take another stab at it in June. Probably the 200k. We'll see!

Mike, I appreciate that. I'll keep at it. I would like to see you out there too.

Amazing performance, Wil. No way I can add distance as fast as you are. Your ambition inspires me to try harder.

Well you may not have finished, but I'm impressed you gave it a shot anyway. I wouldn't have even tried, with so little base. You did a great job despite your setbacks. I bet next time you'll get it!

@Pondero, Your words inspire me to keep going. I will keep at it. I have a huge, life changing adventure planned for 2013 and I have to be ready for it. Onward it is!

@Apertome, I read about your latest adventure and it made me think of my own. It is easy to wonder why we keep trying but it speaks loudly when we just keep on going.

DUDE!!! way to give 'er! Great riding with you on Saturday. Can't say that I have seen many other folks keep suffering through like you did. I think most folks would have folded long before you did. Ride soon?
